These are my favorite ceremonies! Known historically amongst many Sephardic Jews as Zeved Habat the contemporary term Simchat HaBat (Celebration of the Daughter) has been adopted by many Jews of Ashkenazi practice as historically the Ashkenazim did not have a special ceremony for baby girls. Instead, the father announced the name of the baby in the synagogue. The term Zeved Habat derives from B’reishit 30:20, where Leah, the matriarch, after the birth of Zevulun, states, “Zevedani Elohim oti zeved tov,” “Elohim has given me a good gift”

Like all of my services, I personalize your Simhat Habat ceremony. I work with each unique person or family to craft a meaningful ceremony. If you are not in the greater Seattle area I can help you through all the preparations and coordinate with your local officiant. If you choose to do a local ceremony I can also officiate.

What to Expect: In our initial meeting I will get to know you and discuss how to make the ceremony for this important life event just as you want it to be. Before our first zoom meeting I put together a rough outline for the ceremony on a google doc and share it with you so that you can make comments and ask questions. During the meetings we go over it and customize it, tailoring it to fit your personal preferences as well as determining who will do what. After the details of the ceremony are hammered out we have one more final zoom meeting to go over everything, practice your parts and answer any questions you may have. And then there is the actual Simhat HaBat ceremony at your choice of venue!
